Dear SSSI NSW Members,
Welcome to SSSI NSW's first Geo Message for 2012. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable festive season.
There is great range of events and activities in the planning across the country in 2012 and your SSSI NSW Region Committee will be busy as well.
The first event is the GEONext 1 day conference for which SSSI NSW is a partner. Our partnership provides all SSSI members a $50 discount upon registration and mentioning of the SSSI discount code which was emailed to all members in December.
Members who have received the discount online will also need to quote their SSSI membership number when registering on the day. We encourage all members to attend this new and innovative event. Visit the SSSI table on the day for information about certification as a GIS professional!
GeoNext is a brand new event, aimed at all practitioners of location-based technology. The audience will comprise experts from the fields of GIS, mapping, mobility, software development and business – anyone with an interest in the next evolution of geo and the opportunities it brings.
Join the conversation with leading developers, businesses and entrepreneurs, and learn about the future of location technology, how to monetise locationand see the latest location start-ups. For further information on the event visit http://www.geonext.com.au/
The NSW committee will have its first meeting for 2012 on Thursday 9th February when we will be discussing dates and formalise topics for SSSI NSW events for 2012. My hope is for a full one day conference / workshop in July. If you are interested in a particular topic(s) or to help out on the day please email me at [email protected]. Some of the topics we have discussed include webmapping, spatial databases, continuation of the engineering theme with underground utilities plus a GIS Program Management course by April.

SSSI Head Office has advised that the CPD Online Database will be live at the end of March. The online database provides a crucial service to members in maintaining, tracking and reporting their CPD event attendance. CPD is a core element of being a professional member of the SSSI and is key in maintaining certain certifications. The Hydrography Commission ensures compliance of its certified hydrographic surveyors each financial year in order that they maintain certification for the following year in accordance with the Australasian Hydrographic Surveyors Certification Panel (AHSCP). The database will provide a means for Australian and International members alike to fulfil their commitment to maintaining certification each financial year. To access the CPD Database when it goes live, members will require a password for the members area.
