It is nomination time again for Committee position of the Regional Management Committee and some Commissions. The committee endeavoured to have most positions filled by nomination rather than the usual casual vacancy.
Eugene Browne spoke at the recent careers event at Burswood run by Hobsons which was well attended by vocational guidance officers who were present to hear about the different career choices for students. Eugene's talk and display was very well received with many attendees seeking further information on surveying and spatial sciences information.
The WA Spatial Excellence Awards were announced at the Awards Dinner held at the University Club of WA on 22nd July. The SIBA and SSSI event was kindly sponsored by ESRI Australia, Landgate, Whelans, NGIS, WALIS, Department of Mines & Petroleum and Hille Thompson and Delfos, and once again it was an outstanding success.
We were fortunate to have Lisa Harvey, Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business, open the evening and present some awards. The individual award winners were: Piers Higgs - SSSIWA Professional of the Year Award; Asshe Craven - Service to the WA Surveying and Spatial Sciences Community Award; Nicholas Flett - SSSIWA Young Professional of the Year Award; Peter Douglas - SSSIWA Education and Professional Development Award; Liz Marjot - SSSIWA Teacher of the Year Award; Stuart Gralton - SSSIWA Undergraduate Student Award; Deavi Purnomo - SSSIWA Postgraduate Student Award; Ed McKinnon - Professional Eminence and Excellence in Surveying and Spatial Sciences Award. Michael Ridout received a SSSIWA Chairman's Citation, Kerry Smyth and Renee Glasson received a Certificate of Recognition and student ArminTuka received a Certificate of Merit.

Speakers at our recent CPD seminar were Elizabeth Lee of CyArk, California, USA "Surveying and Mapping of World Heritage Sites by CyArk"; Peter Muirden of the Department of Water "The WA Coastal Plain Lindar Dataset" and Senior Constable Steve Marks, Forensic Field Operations, WA Police "Forensic Surveying".
The CIG meets monthly at the SSSIWA office. This month there was significant discussion on our proposed changes to the delegation of Building Strata Approval to Local Government by the Department of Planning, problems with the Building Bill 2011, and R-code developments.
The ESIG meets bi-monthly at the office. This month we reviewed the Engineering Surveying Certification renewal process with recommendations to the Commission and Consultative Council and discussed the strategies for informing industry employers and employees of the process.
ISDE and WALIS Forum - 23 to 25 August at the Perth Convention Centre. SSSI and SIBA have a joint double booth to promote services and the industry to delegates.
Retired Surveyors luncheon will be on 13th September at Sizzlers Innaloo.
Fellows Dinner - the annual Fellows Dinner will be held at the University Club of WA on Monday 19th September. Honorary Fellows and Fellow from SSSI and all the former institutes are invited to attend. This dinner is well attended and is always thoroughly enjoyed by all attendees.
