Geo Message (July 2011)

Welcome to the July edition of the ACT Region GeoMessage. Winter in Canberra is a time to stay inside and keep warm so June hasn’t been our busiest month; however we are planning for more activities in the second half of the year, including our AWARDS DINNER so read on and make the most of your membership.

Inside SSSI

Committee news:

Your ACT Executive met again on Thursday 21 July at National Surveyors House. The main issues discussed included:

We are still looking for a Spatial Information Focus Group Coordinator and a representative on the national Land Surveying Commission. If you are able to assist with either of these please contact me so that we can progress these important areas of service delivery.

The next Committee meeting will be on Thursday 18th August and the next Executive meeting will be on Thursday 22nd September. It you have any issues or suggestions you would like raised please contact me.

ACT Regional Assistant (RA):

Welcome to Liz Alder, our first Regional Assistant. As noted in the last GeoMessage Liz is extending her role as Membership Officer in Head Office to include support for our Region. Liz attended our July Executive meeting and her role will include communicating with members; preparing meeting minutes; managing the ACT Region micro website; assisting with all events; and other tasks as required by Committee. I briefed Liz on our evolution so far and I’m sure that her involvement will help all the Committee provide an improved level of service to you the members. If you need further information on the Region and its activities please give Liz a ring at Head Office.

YPs search:

Matt Jakab is actively seeking young spatial professionals to join his team of Geocentric Gurus. If you are under 35 and keen to meet other YPs then contact Matt at Matthew.Jakab@ga.gov.au. SSSI membership is not a pre-requisite, so if you know someone who would be interested suggest they contact Matt.

Canberra Careers Market

We are set to present the benefits of a career in surveying and spatial information to an estimated 8000 students who will attend this year’s event at the Australian Institute of Sport on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th of August. We have gathered information from a number of tertiary institutions in the region and will be working hard to attract your future employees. A number of members have volunteered to assist; however if you would like to come along and talk to our next generation of SSSI members then we look forward to seeing you there.

Women in Spatial Breakfast

The Women in Spatial Breakfast will be held on Thursday, 01 September 2011 from 7:30am-9:00am. The WIS breakfast theme is "The Challenge of Change".  Our speakers, Gary Nairn, Gail Kelly, Alla Metlenko and Veronika Frank, will be speaking to this topic and imparting their experiences and wisdom! Registration is open to all.  Places will be strictly limited. Venue to be confirmed.

October CPD event:

This year’s October CPD event will dovetail with the SSSI AGM and an optional dinner on Thursday 27th and parallel CPD events on Friday 28th. One will focus on the needs of our surveyor members and the other on the spatial information and remote sensing fraternity. We are still gathering ideas for presentations so please contact Greg Ledwidge at Greg.Ledwidge@act.gov.au. Meanwhile put the dates in your diary.

We look forward to seeing you at our next event or hearing from you with your ideas as to how we can service our membership and the spatial community in the ACT.
