Your ACT Executive met again on Thursday 23 June by teleconference. The main issues discussed included:
If you are able to assist in coordinating activities relating to spatial information within the Region then please contact me at Chair.email@example.com so that we can progress this important area of service delivery. We are also looking for a surveyor to represent us on the national committee of the Land Surveying Commission.
The next Executive meeting will be on Thursday 21 July and the full ACT Committee will meet next on 18 August. It you have any issues or suggestions you would like raised please contact me at Chair.firstname.lastname@example.org.
Following discussions with the CEO and support from the ACT Region Committee I can now advise that the Region has appointed Liz Alder as our first Regional Assistant. Liz joined the SSSI Office team in a part-time capacity last month and is keen to extend her involvement. We believe that we can progress many of our member services at an accelerated rate and improved way with this level of assistance, so this is an exciting change to our structure here in the ACT. Liz will be working in a part-time capacity for us and the details of this relationship will be decided next week. Please join me in welcoming Liz to the ACT Region and I’m sure you will all get to know her over the next few months.
As advised in previous GeoMessages, the winding up of the Canberra Division of ISA and the incorporation of its previous responsibilities into the SSSI ACT Region has provided the opportunity of special project funding for the Region. Your Committee is still calling for ideas as to how these funds can be utilised to benefit SSSI ACT objectives. We have received some further ideas in the past month so the current list is as follows:
We are yet to finalise our options so please forward your ideas to Robert Twin at Chair.email@example.com.
As announced in last month’s GeoMessage ACTPLA (now ACT Environment and Sustainable Development) have already signed up again as a Regional Bronze Sustaining Partner for 2011/12. If your organisation would like to show its support for the SSSI ACT Region through such a partnership please contact Chair.firstname.lastname@example.org. Packages start at $1,500 and offer a range of benefits.
The SSSI Board has recently signed-off on free student membership of SSSI for those studying full-time in a Diploma, Bachelor, Honours or PHD level at a university or technical institute either in Australia or overseas. If this fits your profile then look for further details on the new SSSI website.
Matt Jakab is actively seeking young spatial professionals to join his team of Geocentric Gurus. If you are under 35 and keen to meet other YPs then contact Matt at Matthew.Jakab@ga.gov.au. SSSI membership is not a pre-requisite so if you know someone who would be interested suggest they contact Matt.
We welcome Fery Oktora, Peter Locke and Jasmine Elson as new members to SSSI and our Region, and look forward to your involvement during the coming year.
The ACT Region would like to congratulate David Sloan and Peter Mayberry who have recently joined the ACT Government’s Survey Practice Advisory Committee as nominees of the SSSI ACT Region. The Committee also thanks Mike Lavis for his contribution to that Committee during the past 3 years.
Greg Ledwidge is planning our next twilight CPD event. The initial date of 26 July may slip a little as Greg puts together the program which will include a Spatial Information 101 session and information on the GISP-AP Certification program. More information to follow soon.
Put the date of 13 August in your diary for the major social event on the SSSI ACT Region Calendar for 2011. Building on the success of last year’s event Steve Hogan and Mike Lavis are planning this year’s Awards Dinner at a venue to be advised. Steve is reviewing the project award categories for this year, but the Individual awards are those established across the SSSI click here for details and I suggest that you start preparing your individual nominations now. The project award categories will be published in the June GeoMessage.
This is an annual event which is growing in popularity and an important opportunity for us to spruik our profession to the next generation. Schools bus many of Canberra’s senior school students to the AIS to learn what careers are on offer and your Region has invested $700 in a booth to provide us with an opportunity to tell our story. The event will be held on 3-4 August and we are looking for volunteers to assist in promoting our industry options to a willing audience. Please contact Robert Twin if you can help. Chair.email@example.com.
Each year your Region Committee stages 2 major CPD events. The next one is planned for Friday 28 October. We are seeking your ideas on topics you would like us to address so that this can be of maximum value to you. Please provide your ideas to Greg Ledwidge at Greg.Ledwidge@act.gov.au.
We look forward to seeing you at our next event or hearing from you with your ideas as to how we can service our membership and the spatial community in the ACT.
